<p><strong>Vermont Specialty Food & Beverage Producers Win National 2022 Good Food Awards</strong></p>
<p>BERLIN, VT - Thirteen Vermont specialty food and beverage producers received twenty awards across ten categories in the annual 2022 Good Food Awards. Seven members of the Vermont Specialty Food Association received awards, including:<a href="https://blakehillpreserves.com/"> Blake Hill Preserves</a>, <a href="https://www.champlainorchardscidery.com/">Champlain Orchards</a>, <a href="https://www.montiverdivt.com/">Monti Verdi Salumi</a>, <a href="https://pinuppickles.com/">Pin Up Pickles</a>, <a href="https://www.republicofvermont.com/">Republic of Vermont</a>, <a href="https://runamokmaple.com/">Runamok Maple</a>, and <a href="http://www.vermontcreamery.com/">Vermont Creamery</a>, were announced during a virtual award ceremony on Friday, January 14<sup>th</sup>. <p>The Good Food Awards are presented by the Good Food Foundation as a way of “shining a spotlight on the taste-making crafters at the vanguard of deliciousness and social and environmental excellence. The Awards catalyzes a shift in spending towards truly good food, and the rest of the industry follows.”</p>
<p>Winners will be honored at the Good Food Awards Ceremony on Friday, March 4th in San Francisco. This year’s Good Food Award Winners hail from 39 states and Washington, D.C. Chosen in a blind tasting from thousands of entries before passing a further sustainability and social responsibility vetting process, nearly half of the Winners are first-time awardees. 56% of the Winners are woman-owned businesses and one in six are BIPOC-owned businesses. Across 18 categories, each recognized crafter demonstrated exceptional taste and a deep commitment to building a more sustainable, just food system.</p>

<p><strong>Answers provided by: Amy Perotti, Co-Owner, MOCO</strong><em><br><br>Q. Tell us a little bit about your company’s background and what you produce.</em><br>A. MOCO is pure & simple hot chocolate. Nothing lab-created here, just chocolatey goodness made from real foods. Because this all-time favorite should be enjoyed and never questioned!<em><br><br>Q. What do you find most rewarding about owning your own business?</em><br>A. Seeing people’s expressions turn from somewhat skeptical to enjoyment once they’ve tasted our mix. What tops that is when it’s a child! Because we all want to help our kids create healthy eating habits, right?<em><br><br>Q. What is your proudest accomplishment as a business owner?</em><br>A. We were shocked and humbled when we found out MOCO’s Peppermint won the 2020 sofi™ New Product award for the Coffee and Hot Cocoa (Non-Ready-To-Drink) category. As proud of that award as I am, converting kiddos over to MOCO and away from the sugary staple we all grew up on is right up there with it!<em><br><br>Q. How has COVID-19 changed your approach to business?</em><br>A. Like so many small businesses, the impact of being closed off from people has been huge. We relied on events like festivals, fairs, and trade shows to get our name out there, and since the pandemic, we had to pivot to specialty platforms to build our audience virtually. I never expected entrepreneurship to be easy and I knew I’d have to roll with what came along, but this one was a doozy.<em><br><br>Q. Why did you choose to become a member of the VSFA? How have you benefited from being a VSFA member?</em><br>A. As soon as we decided to go for it, we researched support organizations and found the VSFA. The time and effort the VSFA staff invests in building this community speaks volumes of their passion for helping. It’s been the perfect resource for introductions, collaborations, and finding answers. I can drop them a note and have confidence a response will be delivered that day…a skill I’m still working on!<br></p>
<p>Oh, and a big shout out to the folks at the VSFA who worked diligently for us and reimagined in-person events into virtual ones during this unprecedented time.<em><br><br>Q. What do you most enjoy doing in your spare time? Do you have a hobby/favorite pastime?</em><br>A. <p><strong>Bellcate School Dog Treats</strong> is a dog treats barkery in Essex Junction, VT that produces local, all natural dog treats in a progressive employment program for students with disabilities. Our nutritious and delicious ingredients provide many essential nutrients to support dog health.</p>
<p>In 2018 Bellcate School decided to emBARK on a business solution to support the complex needs of students with disabilities. Our vision was to create a practical solution to a real problem that our students and families had experienced for a long time. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities in the US is twice that of people without disabilities. Once our students graduated and were prepared for their next big step in life, they were met with limited opportunities. This lack of opportunity translated into challenges with finding a sense of purpose and belonging and oftentimes led to regression in progress and quality of life. </p>
<p>At Bellcate School Dog Treats (BSDT) we’ve created a vocational training program where students can learn and practice skills during school that can lead directly to adult employment within our company. And while jobs are important, we also recognize at BSDT an even greater need for a sense of belonging and community. Our vision related to community is to shape an inclusive world that learns, plays, works and grows together with an engaged and spirited heart. We are a community at BSDT- Our people, our animals and our environment.</p>
<p>At BSDT we teach and practice taking care of the land regardless of ownership with an eye to ecological, economic, social and cultural considerations. We are also committed to partnering with individuals and businesses who share a common goal: making sustainable decisions that protect and preserve our precious natural environment and resources.</p>
<p>It has been an incredible journey and through the collective efforts, creativity and resilience of everyone involved, our vision has become a reality. BSDT trainees and employees are engaged in every aspect of the business - mixing, baking, packaging, labeling, shipping, delivery, as well as sales and marketing to name a few. We have set up ecommerce on our website and we are also selling in stores all over the country. We are grateful for the reception and collaboration we have experienced from everyone we have met. We look forward to bringing our nutritious and delicious dog treats into every home we can while providing dynamic employment opportunities to individuals with disabilities. </p>

[content] => <p><strong><em>Alliance members commit to food waste reduction and repurposing, and decarbonization</em></strong></p>
<p><strong>Boston, Ma. </strong><strong> – </strong>Stonyfield Organic and Cabot are joining forces alongside the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance (FPSA) and Dairy Farmers of America to place dairy as a leader in forging a circular pathway to decarbonization and climate change mitigation. The Alliance, founded in 2020 by Vanguard Renewables, Unilever, Starbucks, and Dairy Farmers of America, aims to accelerate long-term commitments to avoid or eliminate food waste first and repurpose what can’t be eliminated into renewable energy via farm-based anaerobic digesters. The Farm Powered Strategic Alliance has been named one of Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Ideas.</p>
<p>“These two sustainably minded dairy companies are stepping up to a leadership role in climate change mitigation at a time when the eyes of the world are on the UN Climate Change Summit” said John Hanselman, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Vanguard Renewables. “Each new Alliance member further enables the expansion of this farm-centered program to all major metro areas nationwide. Stonyfield Organic and Cabot now join other dairy brands and manufacturers including the Dairy Farmers of America to regenerate unavoidable waste into value and to help sustain the family farms that supply their milk,” added Hanselman.</p>
<p>Cabot Creamery/Agri-Mark, a Certified B Corporation and dairy cooperative best known for its classic sharp cheddar cheese and butter, has worked with Vanguard Renewables from the beginning and has a longstanding commitment to sustainability. Two of its farm members, Goodrich Farm in Salisbury, Vermont and Barstow’s Longview Farm in Hadley, Massachusetts, host Farm Powered anaerobic digesters. Cabot not only sends inedible organic waste from its manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts and Vermont to those digesters, but the Cooperative also purchases the renewable energy produced from the Farm Powered anaerobic digestion process to power the Massachusetts facility. “Cabot epitomizes the virtuous circle, closing the waste to energy loop by recycling its unavoidable manufacturing waste at an on-farm digester and decarbonizing their thermal energy usage by purchasing farm-derived renewable energy,” said Hanselman.</p>
<p>“It was a logical decision for us to join the Alliance; for any food organization trying to thoughtfully manage their energy footprints, there isn't a reason in the world not to join the FPSA and be a part of a solution," said Jed Davis, Director of Sustainability, Cabot Creamery.</p>

<p>The Farm Powered Strategic Alliance, founded in 2020 by Unilever, Starbucks, Dairy Farmers of America, and Vanguard Renewables, is a pre-competitive collaborative movement to boost food waste reduction and recycling, and expand renewable energy production across America. The Alliance offers U.S. food manufacturers and retailers with a circular approach to reducing the detrimental environmental impacts of CO2 emissions and offers a pathway toward a carbon-neutral footprint. Members have the opportunity to recycle unavoidable food and beverage waste on farms where it is combined with farm manure in a Farm Powered anaerobic digester to generate renewable natural gas (RNG). The process also produces a low carbon fertilizer that host farms use to support regenerative agriculture practices and provides the American farmer with a diversified income stream.</p>
<p>Hanselman explains that the potential impact of the Farm Powered Strategic Alliance continues to grow. In the United States, over 40 percent of all food produced is discarded and finding ways to reduce that waste is a priority. Across the country, some unavoidable food waste is still sent to landfills or incinerators, or is land applied, but can be repurposed to produce renewable energy. Organic waste recycling is a solution that addresses compliance with organic waste bans and the Biden Administration’s climate change plan to slash greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030.</p>
<p>“In the early 2000s, the milk market was crashing, and we needed to diversify to keep our farm alive for the next generation. In partnership with Vanguard Renewables, we added an anaerobic digester to the farm which reduced our carbon footprint and our energy costs. We’re really proud of that decision” says Dennis Barstow, Marketing and Education Manager, Longview Farm of Hadley, Massachusetts, a Cabot Creamery Cooperative member.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><strong>Vermont Specialty Food & Beverage Producers Recognized as Finalists in Social, Environmental Excellence By Good Food Awards</strong></p>
<p dir="ltr">BERLIN, VT - Fifteen Vermont specialty food and beverage producers have been named 2022 finalists in the 12th annual Good Food Awards. Out of 1,966 entries across 17 categories, 351 producers made it into the finals, with 15 Vermont finalists featuring 27 products in 11 categories. Finalists were announced on November 1st and winners will be announced in January 2022. </p>
<p dir="ltr">The national Good Food Awards are presented by the <a href="https://goodfoodfdn.org/">Good Food Foundation</a> as a way of “shining a spotlight on the taste-making crafters at the vanguard of deliciousness and social and environmental excellence. <p><em>Q. Tell us a little bit about your company’s background and what you produce.<br></em>A. Kestrel Coffee Roasters is making coffee better. We source and roast specialty coffee from all over the world and sell wholesale and retail to restaurants, cafes and groceries. We have two (soon to be three!) café locations in Burlington and South Burlington, Vermont. In addition to amazing coffee drinks, our cafes feature all of our homemade food -- from sandwiches and soups to muffins, scones, and cookies. </p>
<p><em>Q. What do you find most rewarding about owning your own business?<br></em>A. We started Kestrel with the hopes of improving people’s lives with amazing coffee and amazing service and hospitality. So, when people tell us (or share with others) what a great experience they had at one of our cafes, or how awesome our coffee is, or how we--in some way-- turned their day around, it’s just the absolute best feeling.</p>
<p><em>Q. What is your proudest accomplishment as a business owner?<br></em>A. We are really proud of (and humbled by) our relatively quick growth. We went from one café in 2018, to 2 cafés in 2019, and soon-to-be three cafes by the end of 2021. Our entire team has been working hard to make sure all locations offer the same high level of service and quality. The fact that each café “feels like Kestrel” is really something special, and we don’t take it for granted.</p>
<p><em>Q. How has COVID-19 changed your approach to business?<br></em>A. We are grateful for having been able to survive the pandemic storm. The pandemic has reminded us all to be just a little more understanding of others-- from shipping delays, to supply chain issues, to staffing challenges-- there are so many things that are out of our control. No sense in letting them slow you down! </p>
<p><em>Q. Why did you choose to become a member of the VSFA? How have you benefited from being a VSFA member?<br></em>A. We joined VSFA nearly right after we started because we wanted to be a part of the incredible specialty food community in Vermont. There are endless opportunities for collaborations and cross-marketing, not to mention potential introductions to wholesalers and retailers. It’s been an incredibly supportive and helpful group. We especially love asking questions (and reading answers) via the listserv-- super helpful!</p>
<p><em>Q. What do you most enjoy doing in your spare time? Do you have a hobby/favorite pastime?<br></em>A. We love hiking and looking for cool mushrooms! We are very lucky to have so many great hiking options nearby -- we often take tea (yes, tea, not coffee!) with us to brew mid-hike.</p>
<p>Q. <em>Any additional information or news you would like to share?<br></em>A. Kestrel Coffee Roasters is excited to announce that they will be opening a third location at 77 Pine Street in Burlington this December!</p>
